Setenil de las Bodegas is a unique white village in Andalusia, distinguished by its unusual location in a canyon carved by the Trejo River. The village is famous for its houses built into the caves carved into the cliffs above the river.
Artifacts found in the village’s caves indicate they were inhabited 5000 years ago. Modern Setenil developed from a Moorish town situated on a sharp bend of the Rio Trejo northwest of Ronda. Currently, the village has less than 3000 residents but attracts many tourists.
What to see in Setenil de las Bodegas?
First and foremost, the village itself. The streets and houses are a sight themselves.
Setenil Castle, from the 13th century. The castle features a 530 m long wall with nearly 40 towers; it is one of the few Nasrid castles that has preserved its entire medieval fortification.
Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación Church. Mudejar and Gothic style, from the 15th-17th centuries. One of its main features is that it consists of two churches, one Mudejar and the other Gothic.
Calle del Sol – the main street lined with shops and restaurants. You can take a small tapas tour or have a more substantial meal on this street.
Parking
When driving to the village, you will be directed by a parking sign around the village to the other side, where the main attractions are located. There is a paid underground parking lot.
