If you want to travel from Estonia to Spain, what are the different options?

Flying to Spain

The first option is flying. We have traveled from Estonia once a month or every two months, so we have tested several flight routes.

AirBaltic offers direct flights from Tallinn to Malaga. In the summer, I usually follow a simple rule – if the direct flight is cheaper than a flight with a stopover and accommodation, we fly directly from Tallinn to Malaga. If the stopover option is cheaper, we take the time for the indirect route.

The most common route with a stopover is Malaga – Milan – Tallinn. Milan is included because one of my favorite stores is Oriocenter – a mall with more than 280 shops. 🙂

A stopover means an overnight stay in Milan Bergamo, and we often stay at the 57 Reshotel Orio. They have 24-hour reception. Since flights from Tallinn often arrive after midnight, it’s good to know that a room is available regardless of the late arrival.

I also check routes Tallinn – Berlin – Malaga, Tallinn – Billund – Malaga, and Tallinn – Barcelona – Malaga.

We have also traveled via Stockholm, ending with a ferry trip. The Arlanda Express conveniently takes you directly from Arlanda Airport to T-Centralen, and from there, you can take the metro three stops further. The stop is Gärdet, and it’s a short distance to the ferry. Boarding starts at 16:00.

But if you drove to Marbella instead

An alternative is to drive, but since the journey is about 4400 kilometers, spare approximately 4 days. If you drive in shifts, it can be faster.

We drove when there were strict COVID-19 restrictions in Estonia, and in Latvia, you couldn’t enter a grocery store without a COVID pass, but elsewhere, no one cared about the COVID certificate. We stayed overnight in Poland, France, and Spain. The kids described the drive as uncomfortable, monotonous, and tiring – no one wanted to drive again for a long time. With stopovers, these adjectives can be mitigated, but the trip will be longer, and you’ll need to plan more overnight stays.

If you plan to stay in Spain for an extended period, you can’t do without a car. If you don’t want to drive here yourself, you can always order car transport. Be aware that there are queues in the spring for the route Spain – Estonia, as climate refugees head to Estonia. In autumn, there are queues for the route Estonia – Spain. The cost is around €1500, depending on the size of the car, and the journey takes 3-4 days under smooth travel conditions.
