El Caminito del Rey (The King’s Path) got its name from King Alfonso XIII, who walked the trail on May 21, 1921, during the inauguration of a dam. The trail was then named “The King’s Path” or Caminito del Rey.

The original path was built between 1901 and 1905 by the Chorro Hydroelectric Company. It was needed to connect two hydroelectric plants, allowing workers to move more easily between the Chorro and Gaitanejo waterfalls.

The work was challenging, and legends say that some of the riskier sections were built by condemned prisoners. Over the years, the path was used by local villagers, tourists, and hikers, but it gradually deteriorated. After several fatal accidents, El Caminito del Rey was closed to the public.

In 2009, restoration work began, and the historic trail was finally reopened to the public on March 28, 2015.

Lonely Planet named it one of the best new attractions in 2015. The trail, situated in the mountains, is 1 meter wide and about 100 meters above the ground.

The path is now safe. However, due to the possibility of small rocks falling from above, wearing a helmet is mandatory on the trail.

Some Recommendations

    • If possible, plan your hike between 10-11 AM when there are fewer people and the fog has lifted.
    • Visit during the winter if you can, as summer temperatures may be too high for you.
    • You can purchase tickets on the website (https://www.caminitodelrey.info/en/tickets/buy):
      • General ticket (move at your own pace) – price €10
      • Guided tour ticket (group of up to 30 people) – price €18
    • Dress in layers. It can be windy and warm in the mountains.
