Mijas – a place of history, scenic views, Andalusian charm, and an international environment. The area has become home to expatriates from over 120 nationalities.

The municipality of Mijas consists of three main areas: Mijas Pueblo (a mountain village), Mijas Costa (a coastal area), and Las Lagunas (a modern urban district). Each of these areas has its own charm and unique characteristics. Let’s explore these three regions.

Mijas Pueblo – the White Village of Donkeys

Mijas Pueblo is a historic village renowned for its whitewashed houses, stunning views, and donkeys. This traditional Andalusian mountain village is situated 300 meters above sea level, approximately 10 km from the coast.

The history of Mijas Pueblo dates back to Phoenician and Roman times, but the village took on its current appearance during Moorish rule. The Moors developed terraced farmland and established trade, which continues to thrive today.

In the 15th century, the Catholic Monarchs reconquered the area, but Moorish influences remain visible in the village’s architecture.

The history of donkeys in Mijas began in the 20th century when they were used as transportation in the hilly terrain. Today, the donkey has become a symbol of the village.

Donkey taxis originated in Mijas Pueblo in the 1960s, when visitors noticed workers returning home on their donkeys and began requesting photos and rides for a small fee. As the tips often exceeded the workers’ wages, locals found a new way to earn a living. The city council has since established a parking area for 60 donkey taxis.

All rides start at Plaza de la Virgen de la Peña, with donkey taxis traveling through the historic center. Tickets cost €15 for one person and €20 for two.

What to Visit in Mijas Pueblo?

  1. Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción
A church built in the 16th century, blending Renaissance and Moorish styles.
  2. Santuario de la Virgen de la Peña
A sanctuary carved into the rock, associated with a 16th-century apparition. Legend has it that the Virgin Mary appeared to two local shepherds, Juan and Asunción. The sanctuary houses a wooden statue of the patron saint, carved in 850 AD, and serves as an important site for pilgrimage and meditation.
  3. Plaza de Toros
A unique oval-shaped bullring, distinguishing it from traditional round arenas.
  4. Viewpoints (Miradores)
The village’s viewpoints offer panoramic views of the Costa del Sol and the Mediterranean Sea. On clear days, you can see the Strait of Gibraltar and the African coast.

Visitors can also enjoy wandering the narrow local streets, exploring craft shops, or hiking the surrounding mountain trails. Mijas Pueblo’s restaurants serve traditional Andalusian cuisine, including gazpacho and fresh seafood.

Mijas Pueblo and Real Estate

The views from a property in Mijas Pueblo, whether from a terrace or a living room, are truly breathtaking. We have personal experience with a client who initially wanted to purchase a property by the sea. However, while strolling through this mountain village as a tourist, they decided to explore local real estate and fell in love. The proximity to the sea no longer mattered; instead, they were captivated by the openness and the view of the valley, the distant sea, and the vast sky.

The park is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, aligning with the completion of several new developments in the area.

The new park in Las Lagunas will feature a lake, a skatepark, 5,000 m² of children’s playgrounds, and a 2,000 m² dog park. Surrounding the park, there will be a running track and a cycling path.
